"No Big deal" fashion show

Mason hyping the crowd!

Drinks were spilled, speedos were sported and boobies were flashed. No Big Deal. Voleurz held its very first fashion show at Whistlers Longhorn Saloon last week to celebrate the completion of the fall/winter 2008,09 clothing line. Voleurz designers Bruce Giovando and Harvey Li have slaved over this collection for over a year now, and they couldnt be more stoked. The collection consists of 16 product styles with a total of 32 colourways including hoodies, shirts, sweaters and headwear available in stores Canada-wide in August.

A catwalk was built right across the dance floor and models strutted their way to the front, showing off the fresh Voleurz threads. Models included snowboarders Shayne Zwickel and Warren Williams, skiers Josh Bibby, TJ Schiller, Joe Schuster and Peter Olenick, and a handful of fine looking ladies including voleurz own euro spy, Natalie Morel.

In true Voleurz fashion some craziness went down. On stage Peter Olenick was stripped down to his speedos, Joshs Bibbys pirate stache was shaved down to the skin, and TJ showered Natalie with beer... NBD.

The celebration was a great time for all and we're really excited to release our first clothing collection. If youre in Whistler, head over to TMC and check out our current clothing line. Hurry, quantities are low!

Big thanks to our event sponsors
Coors Light, Sapient Snowboards, Liberty Skis, Newschoolers.com, Snowboard.com, Whistler/Blackcomb, Ripcurl swimwear.

And thanks to our event organizers...

Monashee Powder

Monashee powder at its BEST!

I became sidetracked during a study session at the Vancouver library by a phone call from the powderhound himself- Riley Leboe. He tells me its dumping fresh white in the interior and he's booked a couple rooms at the Monashee Powder Snowcats lodge near Vernon, BC. I've been trying to finish university for 6 years now, and its opportunities like this that keep delaying the process. "Whatever. No Big Deal. Let's shred", I tell Riley.

Justin Dorey, Riley Leboe, Bryan Ralph (photographer) and I arrive at Monashee Powder, where we scope out some of the most unique terrain I've ever laid eyes on. For 4 days Riley and Justin slayed pillow after pillow after pillow after.... I couldn't believe our luck with tits deep snow and sunny breaks. "Holy crap shit", I say to myself, and we proceeded to shred the gnar...

Riley peeps a line, then skis a line.
Justin punches through pow while Bryan Ralph shoots it. Bouncing over powder. bang.
Riley then decides to get ultra-gnar and steps up to this 60ft waterfall drop.
We eat good food. We reside to the hot tub and crush a couple cans.

We then head to Vernon for a couple days to meet up with the likes of skiers Matt Margetts, Cam Schuster, Stu Chapman, and Mike Mertion who were competing at a slope-style event at Silverstar.
Killa Cam styled out some right 540's, Margetts takes it to the next level- frontflip, and Mike Mertion brings home the gold with these crazy switch 7's.
The day is over. We build igloo. We ToeStand igloo. We party. We Fishhook. We ToeStand again (1 and 2). We soak Justin.

A big thank you goes out to the staff at Monashee Powder Snowcats for being accomodating to us young bucks.

Game on!!!

Coors Light invited the Voleurz crew to a Canucks game last week. And much to my dismay, the night before the game I rolled my ankle. Worries aside, it did not stop me from one foot hopping my way down from Whistler and into the upper reaches of GM place.

The evening started with a couple casual beers at the Molson Brewery, from which we piled into a tour bus that whisked us down to the arena where our Canucks were set to play the Avalanche. We found our seats and got out shouting voices primed up for the puck drop.

The first period was un-eventful in the goal scoring department, and it wasn't until the first intermission when things got exciting. GM held a contest, in which the winner would have the chance at shooting pucks into an empty net to win a million dollars. And in the company of Bobby Orr the legend himself, the guy won the million bucks and took home a new whip as well.

The second period heated up as the Canucks took a one goal lead. Shortly there after, the Avalanche tied it, which carried into the third period. The nucks put on the pressure early in the period and barely slid the puck past the goal line to take a 2-1 lead. At this point everything was looking promising for a win, and in the dieing seconds of the third period, a sloppy stick handle led to a turn-over, that subsequently sent the game into overtime. Even though the nucks let it slide, we managed to get our faces on the Jumbo-tron...twice!

Overtime was a pretty weak performance, so the game would be settled over a shoot-out. The avalanche scored two goals, and the nucks only one, and that was it. Although our team did not prevail victorious, it was an exciting game, and the Voleurz crew was hyped to have been there.

We jumped back into the tour bus and headed back to the brewery to drink a few more Coors, and then we called it a night.

Special thanks to Baxter and Mike for inviting all of us to share the experience.

The glory land

Dam!

The last couple weeks have been exciting in the glory land that is Whistler. With Darren back on this end of the planet, filming has been in full swing. Last week, I went out with Shayne and Justin VDP, and we hit up a couple popular stunts. We hit up the Cadenwood wallride, and I snagged this one of Justin. Our next stop was Rainbow Park, and the weather was very poor for shooting by this point. Regardless of the rain and slush, Shayne stalled an old cabin on his snowboard.

Shayne and I also went up on Whistler and decided to layback slide a snow covered berm on the mountain bike trail Freight Train.

On the weekend, Darren and I met up with Jeff Boake and Josh Stack at the Daisy lake dam to shoot a rail slide. The spot is photogenic, and we had a good time shooting. Despite a few bails, Jeff nailed down a couple tricks, and Josh also threw down several stomps. Darren did a ToeStand in celebration. Shayne showed up late and landed a few tricks too.

After Josh stomped on his skis, he pulled out his coveted GT snow racer. After a quick discussion, we concluded that it would be most sick if Josh hipped into the cement transition. We built a little jump, and Josh tee'd it up. He had to gap over some rocks, and had no problems doing a stylish shifty. Despite the fact that the steering wheel folded in the compression, he rode out clean. Booya, Darren fealt inspired after bearing witness, and decided to ride the GT off a drop. Under full commitment, the steering wheel folded, and sent Darren head over heels.

In other news, Voleurz has just received a three page feature in Updown magazine. If you're in Whistler, don't just stand there, go grab a copy at TMC.

24 hrs of snowboarding

Darren Rayner

Hour 23 on grouse!

Ever thought of snowboarding for 24 hrs? I hadn't..... until answering a phone call from Braden Dean last week. He explains that photographer Gonzalo Tuleda received the good news: Grouse mountain was to be open for 24 hrs straight, running their chairlifts all night long, and keeping their bar open until 4am (dangerous). I think to myself- "Braden and Gonzo must be crazy"... But so am I.

On a foggy saturday morning (9:53am) Gonzo and I met with snowboarders Braden Dean, Aaron Shapiro, Eric Greene and Barry Hartman, and we headed into the clouds.

This is our epic hour-by-hour journal of 4 snowboarders, 1 photographer and 1 filmer (me) in an attempt to ride our shred-sticks for 24 hrs:

(DISCLAIMER: all photos taken from video camera... sorry)

11:03am
We arrive at the top of grouse mountain. Shooting begins with some fun-time pow shredding. Aaron Shapiro drops in first (one and two). Braden Dean looks at me while doing a nosegrab-finger-pointer-thing-a-ma-jigger, and Gonzo snaps a photo of Barry.

2:56pm
We decide on our goal: Stomp 24 wildcats in 24 hours.
Braden- wildcat / Shapiro- wildcat / Shapiro claims it. "snap!"
..We are unsuccessful, but happy with our 17.

3:36pm
We take a break. Shapiro shows us his new prototype gloves with embedded 'claim clapper'. It involves 2 pieces of plastic attached to your index and middle fingers, allowing for extra pop when claiming isht.

4:21pm
Braden invents the game "Rock -Paper-Scorpion". Its like RPS but with consequences. The looser has to purposely catch their frontside edge while snowboarding. I think to myself- "Braden, you are a genius".
Aaron Vs. Gonzo = Photographer scorpions / Eric Vs. Braden = Eric scorpions / Barry Vs. Braden = Barry scorpions.

9:24pm
The night falls and we hike into the woods to search for a cabin with a quarterpipe. A couple beers are consumed and we have a fun session. Shapiro brings it back with a skate-style nosegrab disaster, and Eric Greene gets inverted with a one-foot handplant... Gonzo and I are impressed.

1:53am
Our crew heads into the lodge for a couple Coors Lights and we hang out with some friends (but Barry keeps snowboarding!)

4:30am
We saddle up and head out for some early morning wallride fun in the park. Greener was cleaning the box with this layback slide, while Braden played on the coping with his backside lipslides. Barry was stomping frontlips, and later pulled together a clean frontlip-270-out for my video camera.

5:31am
The crew heads into the lodge. Shapiro is found passed-out mumbling something about "big spoon little spoon".

6:28am
Braden challenges Barry to a final game of "Rock -Paper-Scorpion" and Barry takes one for the team!

9:55am
Exhausted. Having not slept for 27 hours by this time, I became dazed and confused. How could it be that we're still snowboarding? I couldn't believe the motivation these riders had, squeezing in every lap during the final hour. By the end of it all Aaron was slurring, Barry seeing double vision, Gonzo complaining about work, and Braden.... well.... Braden was "ready to party".
I can't wait to do it again next year.

PS: Big ups to Gonzo for making it happen
